Here is what you missed with Detoxwater during Mardi Gras 2019.
This year, Detoxwater joined the fun on Fat Tuesday and hosted a giveaway of our prebiotic aloe infused water. Our street team gave away thousands of bottles to Mardi Gras goers, so they could stay hydrated and experience what we call Healing Hydration™. Detoxwater was a hit with many party goers who needed serious hydration during and after the non-stop parades and parties. We received so many positive feedbacks about our refreshing taste, how our drink made them feel hydrated and gave them a good pick me up during the festivities. Detoxwater is formulated to tackle the many symptoms of hangovers including dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and vitamin loss. Prebiotic aloe vera is a key ingredient in Detoxwater, which also helps slow alcohol absorption when consumed before, during or after the partying begins. We were glad to join this year’s festivities at the largest celebration – Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Throughout the years, Mardi Gras has evolved to include many great traditions, we thought we’d share these with you too!
History of Mardi Gras:
Mardi Gras begins every year on Twelfth Night, which represents the Christian Holy Day of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day). The season begins on Fat Tuesday the night before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Christian Lent. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting during Lent. The length of Mardi Gras varies from year to year, but it usually lasts anywhere from 45 days to 90 days. Mardi Gras originated in 1699 and to this day approximately 1.2 million people visit New Orleans to attend the festivities.
Mardi Gras Krewes:
A Krewe is an organization that works all year to plan out the various balls and parades for Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras Krewes are often secret societies, so joining them would be no easy task. The Mardi Gras Krewes date back to 1857, when the first parades started rolling the streets. The Mistick Krewe of Comus was the first secret society to host a parade for Mardi Gras and this tradition quickly expanded as more Krewes host parades each year.
King cake is one of the most delicious traditions of Mardi Gras. A New Orleans king cake is an oval shaped coffee cake, braided and covered in icing and sugar in the colors of purple, green and gold (traditional Mardi Gras colors). A small plastic baby is baked inside each king cake. Traditions say that whoever cuts the slice of cake with the baby hidden inside would be king for the day and would also have to purchase the next king cake. The tradition of the king cake dates back to the 1700s when Mardi Gras used to mostly consist of balls for members of high society to celebrate and indulge before Lent. At the Twelfth Night Ball, a king cake is cut and whoever finds the baby or bean in the olden days would host the next ball.
Mardi Gras Colors:
The official colors of the carnival are purple, green and gold. The colors were selected in 1872 to honor Alexis Alexis Alexandrovich Romanoff, a visiting Russian Grand Duke. The grand duke’s house colors were purple, which stands for justice, green, which stands for faith and gold, which stands for power.
Mardi Gras Beads and Throws:
The Mardi Gras throw of beads originated from 1920s when the Rex, the same Krewe that was formed to put on a spectacle for the Russian grand duke, started handing out tiny trinkets to parade followers. Originally Mardi Gras beads were made from glass. Today most beads are made from plastic, but there are still some that uses glass beads. Aside from the traditional beads that we see, there are other prized catches including glittering shoes from the Krewe of Muses, bedazzled purses from the Mystic Krewe of Nyx and sparkling coconuts from the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club.
